The Street society is a creative urban innovation agency. The core of its activity focuses on the transformation of neglected or under-exploited urban spaces into new urban destinations. As part of its projects in France and abroad, the agency designs and produces works of art in public spaces. “Embellir Paris” is a request for proposals launched by the City of Paris in November 2019, open to artists, designers, architects and other actors involved in the transformation of the city. 20 sites throughout the capital were selected to host artistic installations. Successfully making it trough the public vote and grand jury stages, The Street Society and Daniel van Der Noon‘s UP/SIDE/DOWN/TOWN proposal, a 360-degree installation representing LGBTQI+ places, was selected for the 95 rue du Temple site in the Marais.
The covered gallery of 95 Rue du Temple is located at the corner of rue Michel-le-Comte, in the heart of the Marais district. The building was built in 1989 by the architectural studio Ghiulamila. Close to the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Jewish Art and history, Musee Chasse Nature , Archivesnatfr and the Musee Picasso Paris, it sits at the gates of the historic Gay Marais.
Selected as one of the sites comprised within the “Embellir Paris” request for proposals, the covered gallery at 95 rue du Temple was until very recently a dark, degraded, and disused space. For the past weeks the gallery has been undergoing complete transformation thanks to the interactive and immersive art pieces designed by artist Daniel van der Noon and urban innovation agency The Street Society.
The covered gallery at 95 rue du Temple is located at a busy crossroads in the Marais district, opposite the Renée Vivien (a 19th century lesbian poetess) Square and on the same street as the Duplex, one of the first gay bars in the Marais. The Up/Side/Down/Town art piece which now adorns this space contributes to the visibility and transmission of urban LGBTQ+ memories.
The UP/SIDE/DOWN/DOWN/TOWN association was created during this project, with the objective of promoting academic and artistic content related to queer urban cultures.

Spolok The Street Society so zakladateľkou Alice Cabaret pomohli pretransformovať zanedbanú krytú galériu v štvrti Marais, na ulici 95 rue du Temple, za podpory projektu Embellir Paris v roku 2020. Názov projektu a realizačného spolku je UP/SIDE/DOWN/TOWN. Jej hlavným členom je Daniel Van Der Noon. Narodený v Anglicku, vyučený v Kodani. Predmetom jeho tvorby je príbeh miest.
Projekt poukazuje na LGBTQ+ históriu štvrti Marais. Krytá galéria je pretransformovaná pomocou farebných kresieb, ktoré sa nachádzajú na podlahe, stenách, stĺpoch a strope krytej galérie, a vyobrazujú jednotlivé príbehy a miesta LGBTQ+ komunity v štvrti Marais. Farebné kresby výrazne oživujú ulicu, vytvárajú pocit hravosti, a tým pádom pomáhajú ku zníženiu kriminality. Dodnes sa ukázalo, že sa to nestalo terčom vandalizmu. Graphity nezakrývajú kresby.
Je to malý zásah, čo sa týka financií, veľkosti pretransformovaného územia, ekologickej stopy, spotreby času, ale veľký zásah, čo sa týka prezentácie komunity LGBTQ+, skrášlenia zanedbaného územia. Je to lacný, kreatívny, jemný zákrok do urbanizmu miest s veľkým významom. Je to umenie s príbehom. Výrobou novej urbanistickej transformácie nedošlo k veľkej spotrebe prírodných zdrojov. Je to normálna cesta ako pozerať na mesto bez veľkolepých plánov. Zlepšila sa pocitová vnútorná klíma mestského priestoru.
Projekt Embellir Paris bol vyhlásený mestom Paríž v novembri v roku 2019. Bolo vybraných 20 miest, ktoré mohli designéri, umelci a architekti pretvoriť. Podmienkou bolo, že sa musel na tom podieľať v každom tíme zahraničný umelec. To je úspešná cesta. Mesto sa snaží podporovať umelcov, zlepšovať zanedbané územia, vnášať iný prístup podmienkou zahraničného umelca.
Celý projekt pod záštitou Alice Cabaret je dobre prezentovaný na sociálnej sieti Instagram, ktorá je jedná z najviac používaných sociálnych sietí na svete. Po odstupe času projekt nestráca na módnosti. Je to umelecké dielo hodné prežitia dlhého veku. Ľudia si radi skrátia cestu príjemnou nárožnou krytou galériou. Je to veľký sociálny čin. Poukazuje na LGBTQ+ komunitu, jej históriu, a súčasný stav, ktorý je neakceptovaný. V našej blízkosti pred pár týždňami došlo k vražde ľudí z komunity LGBTQ+. Práve preto, je ten projekt nadčasový, nebojácny.
